Recently I reflected on my experience having a miscarriage. Shortly after that experience, I found out I was pregnant again. It was a total shock. I was still grieving the loss of the previous pregnancy and didn’t even realize it was possible to conceive so quickly.
I started noticing some pregnancy like symptoms shortly around Chrismas and after the New Year decided to contact my midwife’s office. After doing some blood work and I found out I was in fact pregnant. They brought me in to do an ultrasound and determined I was 6 weeks along.
I couldn’t believe it! I was so happy and also sad because of the miscarriage. Guilt started to creep in thinking about the various drinking I had done over the past few weeks — wine tasting, bachelorette party, along with additional holiday drinking. I know it is pretty common to drink before finding out you are pregnant. However, thinking about my miscarriage and wondering if I might cause something to wrong this pregnancy really started to weigh on me.
We decided to do genetic screening and have completed our anatomy ultrasound, both have given me some peace of mind. As far as all we can tell it looks like the baby is growing healthy! I feel so grateful every appointment when my midwife says things look great.
Well, I am 25 weeks pregnant now. I’ve decided to document my pregnancy on my blog from this point forward. Another blogger I follow did Bumpdates during her pregnancy and I thought it was a cute way to give an update.
due date: September 4th! Labor Day! My son is a Memorial Day baby so this would be kind of neat to have a Labor Day baby (plus the irony of Labor Day, ha!)
size of the baby: A large cucumber!
gender: I don’t know! I’m planning to not find out until labor. My husband knows though so if I get impatient I can ask him 🙂
clothes: I have some things from my last pregnancy and my sister gave me her maternity clothes. However, we both have only been pregnant during the winter and spring. I’m going to be pregnant all summer so I’m planning to collect some flowy maxi dresses, comfortable shorts, and t-shirts. I’ll keep you posted on what I find.
movement: So much! This is a very active baby. I feel movement all over my tummy. Seems like the baby is really taking advantage of all of the space they have.
sleep: I sleep great — I’m sorry if you’re pregnant right now and not sleeping great! I do wake up at least once a night to go to the bathroom, otherwise no issues. I wish I could sleep on my back, but it is advised at this point I avoid that. Still, sometimes I wake up and I’m on my back. Oops.
what i’m dreaming about: I have had very vivid strange dreams. I had the same experience during my last pregnancy. Lately, I’ve been dreaming about work or my co-workers. That usually happens when I feel stressed about work. Otherwise, I have strange dreams like I’m in a movie or I had one that we had a bunch of turtles in the house. The dreams are always so realistic. It is strange!
missing: Poke & sushi. Not getting winded walking up a flight of stairs.
cravings and aversions: Cravings come as I hear or think about something and it’ll strike me as sounding good. Then I’ll fixate on that food until I eat it. Right now I’m craving soup, salad & breadsticks from Olive Garden and I haven’t been there in years. I’m also thinking about the Chocolate Brownie ice cream from Salt & Straw. I’m not having any aversions that I can think of. During the first trimester, everything was an aversion!
what i’ve bought: Nothing! We don’t have too much space right now and we still have tons of stuff from our son. I’ll probably order a few things when I’m in the hospital after the baby arrives. My co-worker said that is what she did and it worked out fine.
how i’m feeling: Great! Pretty normal overall just with a growing belly! My belly seems to be growing differently than with my son so I do notice some stretching. Other than that, I feel awesome and thankful.
workouts: I’ve been doing different home workouts and an occasional jog. Recently I’ve been doing more prenatal workouts as the regular ones are starting to be a bit uncomfortable. Now that we are having nicer weather, I’m going to try to incorporate more walking into my day.
Seth is: Wonderful! He is super supportive and always wants to take care of me if I need anything.
looking forward to: Meeting the baby! Finding out the gender! And taking maternity leave!
best moments: Feeling the baby move around a ton and just thinking about baby snuggles coming up.
The second trimester has been so great and gone by quickly! I feel lucky every day to be able to be pregnant and am so happy to be able to grow our family in this way.
To all of the women who have had miscarriages or trouble conceiving, I’m thinking of you and hope that your journey has a happy ending.
Thank you for letting me share about this experience!
